Cambus 715 (WPW 200S) at King Street, Mildenhall - 17 April 1993 (190-13)

Saturday 17 April 1993 (1550) – Cambus Limited began a new service linking Mildenhall and Cambridge three days a week (Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays) commencing 22 February 1993. Numbered X10 it ran from RAF Mildenhall (Beck Row) via Mildenhall town centre, Barton Mills (remaining on the A11 dual carriageway without serving the village – but where it could possibly stop and pick-up I don’t know!), Red Lodge, Newmarket and Bottisham. This format ceased operation on Saturday 2 April 1994.

The outward journey was 0910 on Saturdays and 0930 Mondays and Fridays. The return from Cambridge was 1500 on Saturdays but on Mondays Fridays the return time was 1345 when Cambridgeshire schools were open or 1510 during the school holidays.

On the positioning journey the bus worked from Newmarket to RAF Mildenhall travelling via Freckenham village and West Row so a passenger could in theory board on this section for a journey towards Mildenhall or Cambridge.

Eastern Coachworks bodied Bristol VR 715 (WPW 200S) was seen in King Street, Mildenhall working the afternoon journey towards RAF Mildenhall. The driver had already changed the destination display to show Newmarket for the journey back to where the bus was based. This bus, which had been new to Eastern Counties Omnibus Company as their VR200 in December 1977, spent most of its life based at Newmarket with ECOC and then Cambus after the western area of ECOC was split to created Cambus.
