Night Walking

This picture is of my night walking Buddy at the summit cairn of Colsnaur hill in the Ochil Hills in Scotland. Walking at night is invigorating, especially in poor visibility and bad weather. We know these hills very well so we seldom have to check our navigation. There has however been a few occasions when we've fled with our tails between our legs as the weather was just too much for us.

In the dim and distant past we did some quite serious walking, and once the fog came down when were climbing a peak in Snowdonia. Adrian is an experienced map reader, but when we managed to get lower down underneath the fog. the lake which was visible was not the expected one. It's so esy to get lost. Luckily he worked out where we were quite quickly, but I was glad to be off the mountian. All our walks are pretty flat these days - age has taken its toll. :-)))

Thanks Amelia for sharing a great memory. It's always good to laugh about these things later, but I know for myself that I'm usually panicking at the time. I'm lucky to have my local hills to walk at night as I know them very well. GPS helps greatly too with a map as backup... but at night in poor visibility GPS is fantastic, when it works...
