Reiling Dredge

Graflex Crown Graphic 4x5, Carl Zeiss Tessar f:4.5 15cm, Fuji Velvia 100

This was a floating, self-contained gold mine. This dredge was one of nine that operated in Summit County from 1898 to 1942. Each of the Reiling's 86 5-cubic-yard buckets would scoop up gravel which was flowed through separation screens, mercury-lined sluices and other equipment. The Reiling sank in this pond on November 18, 1922. There was another dredge that operated in French Gulch, the Reliance. The two dredges produced an estimated $7 million in gold.
