exploring the blue wonder

The excavator 1473 (type SRs 1500) is a bucket wheel excavator manufactured in 1964 by VEB Schwermaschinenbau Lauchhammerwerk and was in use until 2002. Due to its blue colouring, it is also commonly called the "Blue Wonder".

I'm pretty sure I saw a short documentary about this on one of the Discovery Channel's programmes. I think it was left in situ simply because it was too large and too expensive to dismantle or move it. It's very impressive looking and must be worth a fortune in scrap!
