The Battle of Gettysburg (1–3 July 1863) was fought during the American Civil War between the armies of the Union and the Confederacy in and around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The battle, won by the Union, is widely considered to be the turning point of the Civil War, leading to the Union's ultimate victory and the preservation of the nation. The Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle of both the Civil War and American military history, claiming a total of over 50,000 casualties.
