Chamisa (rabbitbrush).
The plant is a significant source of food for horses, burros and foraging wildlife that wander through the canyon.
In other areas of the southwest - particularly on the Zuni and Hopi reserves - the blossoms are harvested to make a yellow dye and the stems used to make baskets.
