The Pueblo Anasazi, and then the Paiute gathered, hunted and foraged through here.
Paiute legend say the trickster mąʼii (coyote) turned the evil spirits of the legend people into these stone sentinels, and called them Anka-ku-was-a-wits (red painted faces).
