La Fuggerei prende il nome dalla famiglia Fugger perché fu fondata nel 1521 da Jacob Fugger il Giovane (noto come "Jacob Fugger il Ricco") come luogo dove i cittadini bisognosi di Augusta potevano trovare alloggio. È il più antico esempio al mondo di edilizia popolare ancora esistente dopo il progetto della Corte Lando a Padova ed è una delle fondazioni più famose di tutta l'Europa. Le prime case furono costruite già nel 1516; nel 1523 erano 52. I cancelli vengono chiusi di notte, quindi la Fuggerei è molto simile ad una piccola città medioevale indipendente.

The Fuggerei takes its name from the Fugger family because it was founded in 1521 by Jacob Fugger the Younger (known as "Jacob Fugger the Rich") as a place where the needy citizens of Augsburg could find shelter. It is the oldest surviving example of social housing in the world after the Corte Lando project in Padua and is one of the most famous foundations in all of Europe. The first houses were built as early as 1516; by 1523, there were 52. The gates are locked at night, so the Fuggerei is very similar to a small independent medieval town.
