Madagascar, Portrait of a Young Indri

The Indri (indri indri) is a species of primate in the family Indriidae, forming its own genus, Indri. Indris are the largest living lemurs and are native to Madagascar.

The word "indri" means "here it is" in the local language. It is likely a misunderstanding between explorers and Malagasy guides, whose language actually calls this animal "babakoto." According to the Malagasy, these animals revere the sun. Furthermore, the souls of the dead, according to the Malagasy, continue to reside within the indri. Such superstitions, until recently, protected the indri from hunting.
