Antananarivo is the capital of the Republic of Madagascar, founded in the first half of the 17th century on Analamanga Hill.
The city is located on three hills connected by a system of tunnels and stairways. It combines ancient structures, historical monuments, and modern European-style buildings. Low-rise buildings predominate, with residential areas occupying the hillsides.
