Greece, Venetian Winged Lion of St. Mark on the Wall of New Fortress in Kerkyra-City
Neo Frourio ("New Fortress"), also known as the Sea Fortress of St. Mark, is a fortress in the Greek city of Kerkyra (Corfu) on the island of the same name, near the port.
The sea fortress was built between 1572 and 1645 by the Italian architect F. Vittelli on St. Mark's Hill, financed by the Venetian Republic, which then owned the island.
The winged lion of St. Mark, the symbol of Venice, can be found throughout the fortress.
