The Palazzo Comunale dates back to the late 13th century,. It was built on the ruins of an earlier building between 1289 and 1298.
In 1311, the Great Tower, which rises above the palace, was completed, becoming the tallest in the city. Construction began on August 21, 1300,, and was completed in 1311. Its height is 54 meters. At the moment, it is the only tower in the city accessible to visitors.
The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta is a Catholic collegiate church famous for its frescoes by Domenico Ghirlandaio, Benozzo Gozzoli, Taddeo di Bartolo, Lippo Memmi and Bartolo di Fredi. The basilica is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Centre of San Gimignano".
