Italy, Duomo di Siena Inside
Siena Cathedral (Duomo di Siena) is a cathedral (Duomo), or Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta - Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary). An important artistic and historical monument of Italian Gothic, the center of medieval and Renaissance culture in the history of the Republic of Siena (1147-1555). Located on Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square) in the city center.
At the end of the 13th century, work began on decorating the facade. From 1284 to 1296, they were supervised by Giovanni Pisano. The lower part of the facade was designed according to his plan. But the upper part with a large round window was completed at the beginning of the 14th century, and subsequently the entire appearance of the cathedral was determined by the general design and development of sculptural details, carried out by the outstanding sculptor of the Apulian-Pisan school, Niccolò Pisano.
