Thank you for your comment Marek, much appreciated. This was he first time I had tried to take a photo using a compound microscope. It is a stack of about thirty images if I remember correctly, stacked using a trial version of Zerine photostacking software..There is one other possible ID, that being a sponge spicule, it certainly has some traits that may suggest this is it's true identitybut still unsure. As an aside, Zerine does seem to be an excellent piece of software from my limited trial.
