YESTERDAY LISBON COMMEMORATES 270 YEARS SINCE THE EARTHQUAKE OF NOVEMBER 1, 1755

The earthquake, which occurred around 9:30 am on All Saints' Day, with an estimated magnitude between 8.5 and 9, violently struck the capital and much of southern Portugal.

Buildings and churches collapsed, dragging with them the population who were attending mass, and a giant wave, about 5 to 6 meters high, swept through the riverside areas of the city, causing further destruction.

The ensuing fires, caused by falling candles and other sources of ignition, destroyed what remained of downtown Lisbon, worsening the consequences for the population and the economy.

In 1755, the population of Lisbon was estimated at around 300,000 inhabitants and is estimated that between 30,000 and 40,000 people lost their lives, and the city was practically devastated.

After the tragedy, the population fell to approximately 165,000 inhabitants, due to deaths and people fleeing.
