Red Hyundai in the Trees

This is my contribution for World Photography Day, 2026.

I saw a short video on FB about taking photos of a moving subject through bushes and decided to try it out. This thoroughfare runs past my house. Spruce trees line the road.

The photographer I respect and honour today is Joel Sartore from National Geographic. Not only is he an iconic photographer, he is also a wonderful teacher. I was inspired by his teaching videos on the Art of Travel Photography. His Photo Ark project demonstrates the importance of our medium in preserving the existential record of so many species before we destroy them. One photo can indeed say a thousand words.

Check out his books and videos at your local library.

So you were waiting behind the bushes until a car drove past, and then you pressed the shutter button. Well done - that’s a good example.

Wow, I would say you succeeded to the nth degree! Does this make you feel better about having a thoroughfare right there by your house? Now you have a place to make art without even leaving home!

And thank you so much for mentioning Joel Sartore! I hadn't know their work, and they are so strikingly beautiful.

Happy (belated) World Photography Day!
