Resurgam

It shall be from this Parish Church
that the villagers of Brampton will rise again:
where the colliers of Kilnhurst, Swinton and Wath
will be brought up from the dark to the treetops;
where Doris and Arthur, Annie and Stan shall rise;
where the Pals of the First War shall be woken,
bemused by the watery sun and the rain;
where the Vikings shall leave their longships,
and the Legions stand on the Roman Rig.
Children shall be lifted to their mother’s arms.
Rest assured as you turn in your hospital bed,
in your Trojan ditch, or tent, or prison yard,
that all shall rise again at Brampton Bierlow.
