The volcano that was erupting was at the edge of the huge Vatnajökull, and if the magma were to move to one of the volcanoes actually under the glacier it would melt some of the ice and trigger huge flash floods. The problem is that the restricted area is large enough so rangers might not be able to find anyone and get them out of there before the water reached them.
