Part of the Via Romana XVII, it connected Bracara Augusta (Braga) to Asturica (Astorga) via Aquae Flaviae (Chaves). On this bridge, there are two commemorative columns from the time of the Roman emperors Titus Flavius Vespasian and Marcus Ulpius Trajan.
It was during Trajan's reign, in 104 AD, that the first of the two columns was completed, marking the beginning of the bridge's construction.
