As Berlengas
The Berlengas archipelago is a Portuguese archipelago, composed of granite islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean, 5.7 miles west of Cabo Carvoeiro.
They depend administratively on the parish of São Pedro, municipality of Peniche in the West region of Central Portugal and the district of Leiria.
It was the first protected area in the country when, in 1465, King Afonso V of Portugal banned hunting on the main island (Berlenga Grande).
The Berlengas Natural Reserve has been considered
a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve since June 30, 2011.
