Die Phalaenopsis, auch Nachtfalter- oder Schmetterlingsorchidee genannt (griechisch "phálaina" für Nachtfalter), gehört zur Familie der Orchideen (Orchidaceae). Es gibt allein von der Gattung Phalaenopsis fast 100 Arten. Natürlich gedeihen sie als Epiphyten (Aufsitzerpflanze) in den tropischen Wäldern Indiens, Indonesiens und Australiens; man findet sie aber auch in Neuguinea, Taiwan und auf den Philippinen. Schmetterlingsorchideen sind ganzjährig an ein gleichmäßig warmes Klima gewöhnt, mit nur wenige Grade kühleren Nächten und kaum jahreszeitlichen Schwankungen.
