Upernavik

The cemetery at Upernavik sits on top of a hill and looks out to the sea (as do all Inuit cemeteries). Because of permafrost the coffins are above ground and cemented in. This can only be done in the short summer season so the cement mixer pragmatically stays on site.

Such a poignant little series Gudrun......and a really unusual cemetery. It's so colourful and cheery.....very different from what I'm used to seeing.

I'd never even considered the problem of burying bodies when the ground is to hard to dig graves, but the method used here makes perfect sense when you think about it.

A lovely set of photos..!!
