Skarðsheiði and neighbouring Hafnarfjall are the remains of an extinct, 4-5 million years old late pliocene central volcano south of Borgarfjörður.
The "sandwich" structure of tertiary basalts, andesite, numerous rhyolithic layers and gabbro intrusions makes it highly interesting for geologists.

Giant troll women are pretty common in Icelandic folklore, as are male trolls;-) I guess they must have lived at the time when this volcano was active and wasn't peaceful at all!

I have now lost the translation again, but I seem to think that skesse is an Icelandic term for witch I'll try again later for the Wiki translation.
