Skarðsheiði

Skarðsheiði and neighbouring Hafnarfjall are the remains of an extinct, 4-5 million years old late pliocene central volcano south of Borgarfjörður.
The "sandwich" structure of tertiary basalts, andesite, numerous rhyolithic layers and gabbro intrusions makes it highly interesting for geologists.

For a brief time I could read the Wikipedia link in English. The standout point concerned 2 troll women who ate intruders. In such a beautiful place, why didn't they just live peacefully and enjoy the scenery. ;-)

Gudrun replied to Amelia:

Thank you so much, Amelia! I couldn't see any english Wiki-link at all!
Giant troll women are pretty common in Icelandic folklore, as are male trolls;-) I guess they must have lived at the time when this volcano was active and wasn't peaceful at all!

Amelia replied to Gudrun:

I've just found the English translation again, and in your first Pip you mention Skessuhorn.

I have now lost the translation again, but I seem to think that skesse is an Icelandic term for witch I'll try again later for the Wiki translation.

Gudrun replied to Amelia:

Ah yes, Skessuhorn is the one with the female troll:-)

These are breath takingly beautiful wild landscapes, Gudrun.i love remote natural places. Thanks for my visit to them. And in reply to your comment on my photo about lack of gloves in -17°…I was not wearing any either, but had very long sleeves and deep feathery pockets when not photographing! Have a great weekend.
