Þingvellir lies in a rift zone where the American and Eurasian plates drift apart. Several years ago they found a deep crack right under the main path, now the path runs on a bridge over it.
From 930-1262 Lögberg (Law Rock) was the centre of the Alþing ("general meeting", i.e. the Icelandic parliament). Anyone attending the assembly could speak there as all important matters were discussed and decided. After Iceland's union with Norway in 1262 the Alþing lost its legislative power which was only restored in 1904.
