Skaftafellsjökull

by Gudrun
Skaftafellsjökull is a ca.10km long outlet glacier of Vatnajökull. From Skaftafell visitor centre the glacier lagoon can be reached via an easy 5km round trip.

Not too long ago signs like the one in the 2nd note weren't needed, common sense was enough. Sadly not any longer...

Marvellous images of this glacial landscape and great reflections in the main image. As you note, the sign is a sad commentary on the lack of common sense sometimes shown.

Thank you so much, George!
I blame the urge to post on social media, for a selfie the brain gets switched off;-)

So calm and peaceful here. Folks just assume that they can do as they want, and expect to be rescued when they get into difficulties. It happens a lot in this country, some people climb mountains with little or no idea of weather conditions, without proper gear. As the avert says, 'Travel used to be adventure, now it is a tick. box.'

Gudrun replied to Amelia:

Thanks a lot, Amelia! Thankfully it wasn't crowded and there were no idiots taking selfies;-)
You are so right, people are getting ever more thoughtless, sadly it's the same everywhere. Probably the only thing that could work in the long run would be really high fines for rescues caused by irresponsible behaviour.

Such a gorgeous image Gudrun.................captured in beautiful light with wonderful reflections. The close up view of the glacier in the first PiP is extraordinarily good.

I love the sign..............especially the bit that says "don't stand on icebergs", and I had no idea that the water in Iceland would be cold..!!

You continue to impress with these superb Icelandic landscapes..!!

Gudrun replied to Keith Burton:

Thanks very much, Keith! Haha, the opposite are signs at thermal areas where they warn of boiling water;-) Actually, the don't stand on icebergs is there for a reason, social media used to be full of folks doing just that, the iceberg drifting from the shore or toppling over....;-) Now if anything happens nobody can sue as they have been warned.
