Cafetière à piston
Aka French press, which I obtained to make some cold brew experiments of my own. First "recipe" advised to put too much coffee grounds. The result was too strong and bitter. I also maybe let the brew extract too long.
On the second time I used 80 grams of grounds per litre. Although, in case of this small pot of mine it meant 20 grams per 2.5 decilitre. And I let it extract 12 hours.
When using such French press, it was also instructed to:
- to use rather coarse coffee grounds.
- stir the coffee grounds into fridge cold water.
- press the piston just below the surface.
- wrap a plastic foil over the lid to avoid catching tastes in the fridge.
- keep the pot in the fridge "over night" (10 - 12 hours).
- press the piston slowly down, and pour the coffee for example into glass bottle that you can seal and keep in the fridge, in case you do not drink it all at once.
With tint of sweetening such cold brew tastes alright. And unlike hot brew coffee, it tastes good even when diluted.
Next I will try to do some more experiments, like adding some lemon and soda water into the extracted cold brew coffee. Just like there are different cold teas. And maybe I try also some spices mixed into it.
On the background of the image is an old cookbook I have. There is this recipe where it is advised to do such cold brews in general, instead of brewing coffee in hot water. So, if one like to have hot coffee instead, one can even heat the cold brew extraction
And next I probably have to buy a coffee grinder... According one article,
coffee beans lose about 60 percent of their aroma within 15 minutes after grinding.
