In autumn 2011 I used to try this gradient effect quite a lot. The idea is to use gradient layer set to "difference" layer mode, to get an image that change gradually from normal to inverted. It works especially on pictures of some metallic or plastic items, I think.
UPDATE: On PicMonkey you can do this by using your own texture as a mask, and choose 'Difference' for a 'Blend mode'. To download ready made gradients, try mine, available here:
