Strange Memories

Near to where my mum lived, an old meat factory - pigs in at one end, sausages, ham and bacon out the other - was converted into an out-of-town shopping centre where a large Do-It-Yourself chain took the biggest store. Mum was bored, the DIY place was within easy walking distance, and there were regular bargains to be had every week. On one occasion she exchanged her perfectly serviceable green Black & Decker electric drill for a new orange one for a few pounds. Something new frequently appeared in Mum's house and the claw hammer in the picture was one such trophy - it was nice and shiny when first acquired over 30 years ago.
The screwdriver has a different history. It is the sole survivor of a carpentry set some kind soul bought for me one Christmas when I was a child aged seven or eight. I appreciated the present but I would have liked a few pieces of scrap timber and some nails and screws to go with it. Thus it went unused, save for this screwdriver which was handy - and still is - for prising tin lids off.
Photographed with a Nikon D40 and a Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 AI lens.
