Frankfurt - Städel Museum

The Städel Museum was founded in 1817. It was established on the basis of a bequest by the Frankfurt banker Johann Friedrich Städel, who left his house, his art collection and his fortune.

Today, the Städel Museum is one of Germany’s leading art museums. Its collection comprises around 3,100 paintings, ranging from the Middle Ages through the modern era to contemporary art. It is renowned for its excellent temporary exhibitions, which regularly attract hundreds of thousands of visitors.

The coastal town of Étretat has become a myth. Its cliffs captivated numerous artists in the 19th century. Claude Monet was so fascinated by their unique shapes and the natural rock arches that he painted them several times. The Städel Museum presented a major exhibition dedicated to the artistic discovery of the former fishing village of Étretat and its influence on modern painting.

The exhibition Monets Küste - Die Entdeckung von Étretat / Monet´s Coat - The Discovery of Étretat attracted over 250,000 visitors in 2026

Thanks for sharing an image I will never get to see in person. The lighting in the painting is wonderful. I'm always amazed at how a painting like this can seem so alive.

I agree! As all the paintings in the exhibition here feature Etretat as their central motif, you can really see the different exposures and techniques used by the artists.
