Delphi was an ancient sacred precinct in Greece. It was the seat of Pythia, the major oracle who was consulted about important decisions throughout the ancient classical world. The ancient Greeks considered the centre of the world to be in Delphi.

In the 1880s the site was occupied by the village of Kastri, about 100 houses, 200 people. Kastri had been there since the destruction of the place by Theodosius I in 390. Before excavation of the site could be undertaken, the village had to be relocated, but the residents resisted. The village got relocated after an earthquake, with villagers offered a completely new village in exchange for the old site.

The ‘new’ village of Kastri ‘clings’ to a cliff a stone’s throw from the old Delphi. Naturally, it thrives today on the many tourists. The hotel rooms offer a fabulous view of the sea.
