North Nicosia - Büyük Hamam

On the site of Büyük Hamam (=Great Hamam) the Lusignan church of St. George of the Latins was constructed from 1306 to 1309.

The building was rebuilt as a Turkish bath between 1571 and 1590 during the first years of the Ottoman rule. The Gothic-style main entrance is one of the few remaining elements of the original church. Because the street level has risen over centuries, the entrance is now significantly below road level.
