The mosque was once surrounded by a yarn-spinning bazaar (İplik Pazarı), from which its current name is derived. The building dates from the early 19th century. An inscription inside the mosque from 1826 documents its patronage by the Governor of Cyprus. The minaret is one of the few minarets with a stone spire on the island.
