As early as the Venetian period (1489–1570), the area around St. Sophia's Cathedral—today's Selimiye Mosque—developed into one of Nicosia's most important trading centers.

The Bandabuliya municipal bazaar continues this tradition and was built during the British colonial period. After a period of decline, the market was renovated in the 2010s and closed at the end of December.
