Tholos of Maleme

The Minoan tholos tomb at Maleme is an example of Bronze Age funerary architecture. It is known for its size, long entrance passage, and monumental doorway.

The tholos tomb was first discovered in the early 20th century, but its contents were unfortunately plundered. The tomb suffered further damage during World War II when German bombings led to the collapse of its domed roof. In 1966, the site was systematically excavated.
