Maiden Stone

The Maiden Stone (aka "Drumdurno Stone") is a Pictish standing stone. It is about 3.2 metre high stone slab with carved Pictish and Christian symbols, which is dated to the 8th or 9th century. The stone shows considerable damage.

One side shows several depictions that are also common on other Pictish symbol stones: a comb, a mirror, a so-called Pictish beast as well as a stylised centaur and other mythological creatures. The other side has early Christian motifs, including a cross, as well as the image of a man between two sea creatures (Jonah and two whales?).
