From a conversation with local historian in Saintes some time ago, I learned that "just around Saintes are more than 200 Romanesque churches". Churches like Saint-Barthélémy in Grandjean (pop ~250), a simple, single nave church, erected within the 12th century, where medieval lions keep an eye even on spent matches (in the jar).
