Winter raccoon DSC 0089(1)

A young raccoon in winter searching for food. They sleep most of the winter, coming out only in the warmer spells to feed. Raccoons are usually nocturnal but feed by day in the winter to avoid the colder temperatures at night.

They look cute and are also found in Europe (where they aren’t native) – where they are spreading quite unchecked and, according to experts, are damaging the ecosystem by displacing or harming native species.
Great pic.

Hi Jean-Paul,
Thanks for your comments. It always seems to cause problems when animals are introduced outside their natural environment. For what it is worth, raccoons are something of a menace here, although for other reasons. We had a raccoon nest in our chimney a couple of times, where it gave birth to litters of baby raccoons. We put a metal cap over the chimney to keep her out, but she soon figured out a way to pry it off.
