Cardinal in winter DSC 9717(1)

A male cardinal in the snow. At this time of year so much is black and white or shades of grey, so the flash of colour these birds bring is always welcome.

Really pretty birds! A cardinal is my local school's mascot, and there's always a couple pairs of these birds that build nests around my house.

Andrew Trundlewagon replied to HaarFager:

Hi, thanks. I agree, they are very attractive. We bribe them to come close to the house with peanuts. It is quite interesting as there is a strong hierarchy. If squirrels are around, they get to go first and chase everything else away. Next in line are blue jays, who are very bold but are less often present in the colder weather. Last come the cardinals, who linger in the bushes, and are very careful to make sure it is safe before coming for the nuts. I suppose if you are bright red and rather conspicuous, caution is crucial.
