A large clothes peg_IMG 20241118 080508

A large steel clothes peg (or clothes pin) outside City Hall, Philadelphia. A city with a giant clothes peg as the centre piece of its civic sculpture gets my vote. It is the work of Claes Oldenburg, from the 1970s. I did not know what to expect from my quick trip to Philadelphia, but I was very pleasantly surprised. There is a lot to see, and everyone was immensely welcoming and helpful. (I highly recommend the Amish booth in the Reading Terminal Food market).

The clothes peg provides a good contrast to the architecture of city hall (which reminds me of a wedding cake). A humble clothes peg becomes daring and dynamic just by being where it is. Its being in shadow increases the tension -- form versus ornament. Well spotted and captured.
