Another glum photo from the Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, opened in 1829 and closed in 1971. The prison is now a ruin, open for visits. This is a recreation of Al Capone's cell. He was a prisoner in Philadelphia for about seven months, and seems to have lived in style, with a Victrola radio, a desk, a rug and paintings on the walls. He shared the cell with an embezzler.

This might be confused with a hotel I stayed in near Gatwick Airport. But their rooms were a bit smaller and had wood chip wallpaper.
