The church of St. Botolph's along the river Adur near Bramber. The building was founded by the Saxons, and subsequently modified. In Norman times it was renamed St Peter de Vetere Ponte (St Peter of the Old Bridge) as it stood by a bridge crossing the river. With time the river Adur silted up and it was no longer possible to sail up to Bramber, and the bridge fell into disuse. The original Saxon name (St. Botolph's) was then reinstated. There are many churches dedicated to St. Botolph's throughout England, and, intriguingly, the name Boston, as int he city in the UK, is a corruption of Botolph's.
