Waite Gatehouse lock
The old Waite estate, now part of the University of Adelaide, had a Gatehouse at the entrance to its long drive. Recently, as a result of road widening, and after protests from the community at the prospect of its being reduced to rubble, the government provided funds for its relocation closer to the old Waite House. The Gatehouse has just been reopened, with visitors welcome to visit its rebirth and repurposing as a place for Volunteer organisations connected with the maintenance of the Arboretum, also on the site. Originally the home of the Gatekeeper and his family, the building has been extended to include the new Volunteer Centre. All that remains intact inside is this old lock from the 1880s. It has been vigorously cleaned and put back in working order. Fragile, it is not used often, and entry is via the new back extension.
