Confluence of river and sea at the Murray mouth
I learned on our day cruise that the Murray mouth has moved considerably over the years, and at present is closer to Goolwa than it has ever been. The recent floods have opened up the mouth further. In recent years dredges have been required to keep the mouth open. The water flow has been diminished by the demands of agriculture upstream. South Australia, where the river meets the sea, does not get sufficient flow to keep the mouth open year round.
