I wonder if this village has Viking roots? The suffix 'by' indicates a hamlet/village/town. I really like these village signs.

Good to know the correct pronunciation Peter. It would be easier really if we had accents over certain letters like many other languages, but it's fun finding out we have got it wrong for so many years, as in some village names around here! A beautiful village sign and nicely taken.

In Polish "groby" mean graves - literally holes or pits where dead are buried.
I went to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groby#History for explanation and I think that I found it (in the last paragraph. Awesome!
