The Old Railway Bridge

This image, taken from Hayling Island looking towards Langstone, is of the old railway bridge (made mainly of wood) that carried the steam railway line from Havant to Hayling Island. The train was known locally as the Puffing Billy and it ran from 1867 until 1963, when the repairs required to keep the bridge in safe working condition became to expensive and the line was permanently closed.

In the first PiP there is a closer shot of what remains of the turntable that was used to open the bridge to boat traffic.

In the second PiP is a shot of the only signal that remains intact.

Thanks very much for these kind comments Roger.........I'm pleased you enjoyed both the photos and the narrative. I remember playing on the bridge when I was very young - we didn't even consider how dangerous it could have been..!!

It doesn't show from this perspective, but the gaps between the concrete slabs and big enough to allow most sailing boats through!

Thanks very much Güni...........I'm pleased you enjoyed this little series.

You wouldn't be able to walk on it.......the perspective doesn't show it, but the gaps between the concrete slabs are quite large! You could walk across the whole space at low tide though!

Have a lovely evening.......best wishes, Keith.

Is it possible to walk over or is it too dangerous?

Keith Burton replied to Stephan Fey:

No, it's not possible.........the gaps between the concrete slabs are big enough to allow the sailing boats to pass through, although you can't tell that from this perspective!

Wonderful views of this industrial masterpiece no obstacle was to great for these railway pioneers and we threw it away chasing bigger and better traffic jams sadly we will never have a good rail system again HS2 has proved that

Keith Burton replied to Peter Castell:

Glad you like this little series Peter........and thanks for dropping in and leaving comments.

It was a great mistake not to repair and strengthen the railway bridge. Nowadays, to get from Langstone to Hayling you either have to have a boat or to use the road bridge, which gets very during the morning and evening commuter times..........and even busier in good weather, especially the weekends and holidays. It's not unusual to see tailbacks of over a mile in each direction..!!

On the plus side.........the route of the old railway line is now a splendid footpath (accessible to most)..!!

The relics make for glorious photos, a green curve in the water! A pity it was to expensive to maintain, a train to the island would be an attraction.
