The Old Railway Bridge
This image, taken from Hayling Island looking towards Langstone, is of the old railway bridge (made mainly of wood) that carried the steam railway line from Havant to Hayling Island. The train was known locally as the Puffing Billy and it ran from 1867 until 1963, when the repairs required to keep the bridge in safe working condition became to expensive and the line was permanently closed.
In the first PiP there is a closer shot of what remains of the turntable that was used to open the bridge to boat traffic.
In the second PiP is a shot of the only signal that remains intact.

The images have some interesting detail with the main image from a superb perspective! and lovely colours!
Keith Burton replied to Roger (Grisly):
It doesn't show from this perspective, but the gaps between the concrete slabs and big enough to allow most sailing boats through!

Wünsche noch einen schönen Abend, liebe Grüße Güni :))

You wouldn't be able to walk on it.......the perspective doesn't show it, but the gaps between the concrete slabs are quite large! You could walk across the whole space at low tide though!
Have a lovely evening.......best wishes, Keith.

It was a great mistake not to repair and strengthen the railway bridge. Nowadays, to get from Langstone to Hayling you either have to have a boat or to use the road bridge, which gets very during the morning and evening commuter times..........and even busier in good weather, especially the weekends and holidays. It's not unusual to see tailbacks of over a mile in each direction..!!
On the plus side.........the route of the old railway line is now a splendid footpath (accessible to most)..!!
