NSR Hist - miners train to chatterley
Workmen travelled using these older carriages, as they were "cascaded" from mainline onto more secondary and then local services, eventually ending their days in "paddy trains". Some would then be scrapped but others would receive a coat of green paint before being sold off as holiday chalets, store sheds and the like.
One suggestion is that this image was taken on the Cheddleton Hospital Branch.
The carriage on the extreme left is a passenger brake, of the type the Knotty Coach Trust were planning to replicate, until the remains at Rudyard Lake were identified.
Not my image; and with a date about 1900, out of copyright.
