Had it just swooped down onto the water and then carried on flying away? Don't swallows use mud to build their nests, and by taking a piece of earth in their beak, they swoop down onto the water, to get the soil wet and then back to making their nests of mud?

I think your right Jenny they do but I suspect this swallow was just taking a drink..
