Just like plants and animals, human possess two types of DNA. Nuclear DNA (nDNA), transmitted by both parents, and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), transmitted only within female lineages. While the spermatozoon does contain mitochondria, these are not transmitted to the egg cell from which the child develops. The male sex (Y) chromosome, on the other hand, is only transmitted within the male lineage in mammals.

In 1984, Savante Paabo succeeded in isolating genetic material from cells extracted from mummies for the first time. After this initial success, he dedicated his energy to finding ways to overcome the issue of contamination of ancient DNA with contemporary DNA into the environment. Savante Paabo invented methods for recognizing and chemically isolating fragments of DNA from specific organisms so that they can be combined using bioinformatics.
