The year 1903 witnessed an early attempt to represent the scene of painting. Paul Jamin staged a sexualized fantasy of the prehistoric painter’s life: the broad-shouldered painter at the center received instructions from an old sage, while bear-breasted women and attentive pupils ohh and ahh before his creation. On the wall of his cave we see copies ofBreuil’s early reproductions of bison from Altamira and the deer encounter from fFond-de-Gaume (see figure 16.5) In modernity Reinsch argued, the “magic of art is not meant literally” – but “it once was rigorously true, at least in the belief of artists.” That was Jamin’s dream: to take for himself the magic art of the caves and unleash it on his own spectators. . . .
