Watermelon originated in Africa, specifically the Kalahari Desert region, and has a history spanning over 5,000 years. Ancient Egyptians were among the first to cultivate it, even depicting it in hieroglyphics and placing it in tombs. From Africa, watermelons spread along trade routes to the Mediterranean and Asia, eventually reaching the Americas with European explorers and enslaved Africans.
